La-ti Tulku Jang-chub-tshul-trim (bla ti sprul sku byang chub tshul khrims) was born in 1922, in the Kham Province of southeastern Tibet. He entered the local monastery at the age of eight, upon recognition as the reincarnation of a previous spiritual master by Gongkar Rinpoche. At the age of fifteen, he traveled to Central Tibet to begin formal training at Ganden Shartse Monastic University.
In 1956 La-ti Tulku was awarded the Geshe Lharampa degree as number two in the annual competition. The following year, he joined Gyuto Tantric College in Lhasa where he undertook the study and intensive training of Mantra. During this period he also served as tutor to many young reincarnate masters and gave numerous public teachings.
In 1959, due to the Communist Chinese occupation of Tibet, he followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama into exile in India. He lived in Dharamsala where he mostly taught students at Namgyal Monastery as well as other interested monks and laypersons. In 1976 Jeffrey Hopkins invited him to teach on a wide range of Buddhist subjects at the University of Virginia for over a year, and later he returned to the States for short periods to teach at several Dharma Centers.
While teaching at the University of Virginia, he received word that he had been appointed as Abbot of Ganden Shartse Monastic College, reestablished in Mundgod, Karnataka, South India. He served in that post for eight years and later alternated between residing there and in Dharmsala.
La-ti Tulku died April 12, 2010, in Dharamsala, India. He was 88 years old.
